What’s important: Syd on her favourite albums and her new chapter

🎶 The Quietus · July 11, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #11

For its renowned Baker's Dozen column, British music magazine The Quietus sits down with Syd, the American singer, producer, and engineer who got her break as a teenager DJing with hip hop collective Odd Future and co-founded the Grammy-nominated R&B group The Internet at nineteen. Ahead of her third solo album Beard, out July 17, she talks Gemma Samways through the thirteen albums that shaped her sound, an eclectic mix spanning rage rap, samba, neo soul, and the British Invasion. She recorded the new album in the small studio she built above her parents' garage, producing ten of its twelve tracks and embracing her lower vocal register for the first time. The title refers to the facial hair she was once insecure about and has come to embrace as a mark of self-acceptance; long an outlier in R&B, Syd says this is the first album she is releasing while already having everything she wants in life. Reflecting on the grind culture her generation was raised on, she adds that figuring out what truly matters takes time and cannot be rushed.
