What Else Is New: From ‘Building’ to ‘F**king Strangers’

🎭 American Theatre · July 4, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #10

In its latest monthly World Premiere Roundup, American Theatre introduces the new plays opening across the U.S. this July, a month when, as the editors note, summer heat visibly thins the premiere calendar. The list opens with an immersive experience in New York: "Building," which for two nights (July 7 and 8) transforms Brooklyn's Pioneer Works into an exploratory portrait of 1970s New York during the construction of the World Trade Center towers. In the Northeast: Gloria Majule's "Mala Aria," about a Tanzanian woman traveling West to pursue a PhD in hopes of eradicating malaria; Miranda Austen ADEkoje's "A New Era," on pioneering Black suffragette Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin, staged in Boston near her former home; and Drew Larimore's dark comedy "The Cannibals of McGower County." In the South, the Contemporary American Theater Festival in West Virginia offers several premieres, from Lisa D'Amour's "The Smoker," about the community that forms among smokers on a New York street corner, to Egyptian-American playwright Yussef El Guindi's "Refugee Rhapsody," in which a chance meeting of two young Arab Americans sets off a fateful chain of events. In the West, social and contemporary themes dominate, and the standout for Northern California audiences is here: Geetha Reddy's "The Employee Dharma Handbook" at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley in Redwood City (July 8 to August 2), exploring intra-caste discrimination among Indian American workers at a SpaceX-type tech company, directed by Snehal Desai. "The Family Album," a musical inspired by MILCK & AG's viral hit "Quiet," follows a young singer torn between her musical dreams and her Asian immigrant family's expectations at San Diego's La Jolla Playhouse. The list closes with Erik Patterson's new dark comedy about love and loneliness online and IRL at Los Angeles's Echo Theater Company. Altogether, the roundup offers a compact portrait of new American theatre in a quieter month: a theatre still drawing its material from urban history, migration, technology, family, love, and loneliness.

F…king Strangers
