Twenty Years in the Making: Harriet Clark on Her Debut Novel The Hill

📖 Paris Review · June 12, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #7

In this Paris Review interview, former deputy editor Lidija Haas talks with Harriet Clark about The Hill, the acclaimed debut novel she spent more than twenty years writing. Clark first drew notice when the Review awarded her its Plimpton Prize for a short story drawn from the same long-gestating book, and over the years the project earned her residencies and fellowships from the Iowa Writers' Workshop and Stanford's Stegner Program, along with no small amount of literary envy. The novel grows out of an extraordinary personal history: Clark's mother, a member of the radical group the Weather Underground, was sentenced to life in prison when Clark was an infant and released only in 2019 after nearly forty years, and Clark was raised by her grandparents. Yet The Hill is not autobiography. It follows a girl named Suzanna whose mother is serving a life sentence in a hilltop prison, and turns that material into something dreamlike and strange, a fable about childhood, family, and who is allowed to claim a life of their own. Released this spring, it has drawn raves from critics including James Wood in The New Yorker.

The Hill
