Lost Kite Editions: A New Minneapolis Press for “Urgent and Insurgent” Voices

📚 LitHub · June 12, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #7

A new independent, nonprofit press has launched in Minneapolis with a striking mission: to publish poetry and literary prose that is, in its own words, urgent and insurgent. Lost Kite Editions grows out of the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop, which since 2011 has connected incarcerated and non-incarcerated writers, and it sets out to make room for voices that have been constrained, erased, or overlooked, especially by the prison system. Its name carries that purpose: in prison a "kite" is a folded, handwritten note passed secretly from person to person, and the press wants to carry such messages and their messengers to readers who have never heard them. Crucially, the model is not simply to publish people who have been incarcerated, but to let them shape literature itself by acquiring and editing books. Steered by figures including MPWW founder Jennifer Bowen and editors who have served time, Lost Kite debuted in 2026 with two titles by incarcerated authors: 21 Birthdays, Kennedy Amenya Gisege's essay about being kept from his daughter, and Disfigured Hours, a poetry collection by B Batchelor. The press is now building toward a national, even international list of writers.
