Travel Ban Keeps Jafar Panahi Away From Karlovy Vary Tribute

🎭 Owrang Editorial · July 3, 2026

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival had hoped to welcome Jafar Panahi to its milestone 60th edition. Artistic director Karel Och says the festival invited the Oscar-nominated director because of his crucial involvement in the competition title Hijamat, which he produced and edited. But in early June an Iranian court upheld a verdict finding Panahi guilty of propaganda against the regime, sentencing him to one year in prison and a two-year travel ban, and prohibiting him from joining political and social groups. Panahi, who won the Palme d'Or for It Was Just an Accident and was nominated for two Academy Awards, returned to Iran by land at the end of March after the Oscars ceremony, keeping a promise he had made publicly. According to his collaborator Nader Saeivar, Panahi now spends his days going to court and meeting his lawyer, trying to get his passport back; a reminder of the price Iranian filmmakers pay for independence.
