Tommy Orange and Orpheus lead a busy week at the Mondavi Center

In The Davis Enterprise, correspondent Jeff Hudson previews the coming week of talks and concerts in Davis, most of them at UC Davis's Mondavi Center. On Wednesday, November 4, Oakland-born author Tommy Orange appears in conversation in Jackson Hall. His first novel, 'There There', was a 2019 Pulitzer Prize finalist, his related second novel, 'Wandering Stars', followed in 2024, and he received a MacArthur Foundation 'genius grant' in 2025. His writing often focuses on Native American characters and themes. On November 7 the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, founded in New York in 1972 as an orchestra without a conductor, performs with pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason, who grew up in England. The program includes Mozart's final piano concerto, Haydn's Symphony No. 91, a suite from Handel's 'Water Music' and a new work by Welsh-born composer Katie Jenkins. On November 8 the Munich-based Arcis Saxophone Quartet plays new arrangements by 48 composers, each inspired by Bach's 'The Well-Tempered Clavier'. The same day, Grammy-winning pianist Michelle Cann and flutist Rayo Furuta play music by Florence Price, Rachmaninoff and Yuko Uebashi at the Pitzer Center, in a concert sponsored by the UC Davis music department.
