Thirty Years On, Cronenberg’s “Crash” Is Still Hard to Watch

🎬 RogerEbert.com · August 17, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #16

Thirty years after David Cronenberg's "Crash" premiered at Cannes in 1996, the film remains as disturbing and divisive as it was then. One audience booed it after a screening, yet the same audacity that drew that contempt also won it a Special Jury Prize. Writing for RogerEbert.com, Alejandra Martinez argues that three decades on the film has found a devoted following, and that it means something new in a world where our ability to connect with one another keeps getting harder. Based on the novel by J.G. Ballard, "Crash" follows a group whose sexual lives are bound up with car wrecks, damaged bodies and technology. James (James Spader) is drawn in after a collision that kills Helen Remington's husband (Holly Hunter), and sinks deeper into the group's rituals, alongside Elias Koteas, Deborah Kara Unger and Rosanna Arquette. Martinez observes that Cronenberg watches these characters with almost no judgment, and offers a key to reading them: after trauma, the brain tries to heal by repeating what nearly destroyed it, claiming a measure of control over it. Every time skin meets steel, the group is reclaiming that control. The piece places the film within Cronenberg's lifelong preoccupation with the body, technology and the difficulty of human contact, tracing the same thread through "The Fly," "Videodrome" and "Dead Ringers." What lasts in his work, Martinez writes, is not the violence on the surface but people who either cannot reach one another or bind themselves together until the bond destroys them.
