The Unloved, Part 151: Millennium Bugs

🎬 RogerEbert.com · July 4, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #10

In part 151 of his video essay series The Unloved at RogerEbert.com, Scout Tafoya turns to "Millennium Bugs," Alejandro Montoya Marín's scrappy low-budget indie, holding it up as an example of cinema made through sheer stubbornness, heart, and personal drive. Tafoya frames the piece as a continuation of his recent writing on the dire state of American independent film, and describes "Millennium Bugs" as a feel-good comedy steeped in the flavor of the 2000s. More than the film itself, the essay dwells on the filmmaker's persistence. For Tafoya, Montoya Marín is a true independent: someone who, despite the struggle to raise money, the loneliness of production, and the market's indifference, keeps fighting to make the next film. He finds "Millennium Bugs" joyful, energetic, and warm; a movie about postponing adulthood, trying to become better, and holding on to a dream in a world that has left little room for independent film.

Millennium Bugs
