Living Something In Your Flesh: Alice Winocour on “Couture”

🎬 RogerEbert.com · July 4, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #10

For RogerEbert.com's Female Filmmakers in Focus column, Marya E. Gates interviews French writer-director Alice Winocour, co-writer of the Oscar-nominated "Mustang," about her new film "Couture," a drama starring Angelina Jolie set during Paris Fashion Week that looks past fashion's glamour toward the body, the wound, illness, and women's unseen labor. The film follows Maxine, an independent film director who, just after arriving in Paris to shoot a video for a major fashion show, is diagnosed with breast cancer. Around her, the film traces the lives of other women: Angèle, a makeup artist who dreams of becoming a writer; Ada, a young model from South Sudan; and the seamstresses and workers behind the scenes of the fashion industry. Winocour stresses that she did not want to make a film about power from the vantage of executives and designers; she wanted to shine a light on the workers, the tired bodies, the scars, and the women rarely seen in cinema or in fashion's own narratives. Winocour says the film draws partly on her own experience with breast cancer, and that working with Jolie was deep and emotional, as the star lost her mother and grandmother to the disease and has lived closely with its fear and inheritance. She describes the film as "sharing the wounds and doing something with them." For Winocour, "Couture" is about the coexistence of beauty and pain: in real life, illness does not stop everything; a woman still has desire, work, money troubles, family, and daily life. So rather than a pitying cancer narrative, the film places the disease amid the chaos of living, loving, working, and surviving.
