The Sound of Worship Beyond Sacred Spaces

🎶 The Quietus · August 31, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #18

Ibukun Sunday's new album Olúsín [Worshippers], released on August 28, is The Quietus's album of the week. The UK-based Nigerian producer says the record draws on African devotional traditions and sets out to make a soundtrack of praise, built on the idea that faith has a music of its own. Writing for the site, Daryl Worthington argues that the album's point is that a profound encounter with sound does not depend on grand architecture, and that a church is only one of the things that can amplify it. The opening track, Whisper, arrives as though the listener has walked into a ceremony already under way. On Amen, a voice speaks through billowing delay while a surge of organ slowly swallows the words, an image of an individual absorbed into the sound of a group. Worthington places Sunday's work within ambient music, close to the blueprint Brian Eno laid out on Ambient 1: Music for Airports and also apart from it, since no specific environment is being evoked here. The album was recorded in Sunday's small home studio in Harlow, Essex, yet it builds the sensation of standing inside a place of worship without having been made in one. Next to his 2024 album Harmony / Balance, shaped by Bhaktivedanta's translation of the Bhagavad-Gita, these tracks are lighter and more immediate, closer to snapshots of fleeting moments of transcendence. The record shows, Worthington writes, that you do not need a church for sound to move you.
