David Byrne has announced a new concert film titled Who Is The Sky?, directed by Brady Corbet, who made The Brutalist and took three Oscars from ten nominations. It was shot over several nights of Byrne's tour at the Hippodrome in Baltimore, his hometown, and is now in post-production. The tour is built around his 2025 album Who Is the Sky?, began in September of that year and has played more than 150 shows across four continents. Onstage, thirteen musicians, singers and dancers move continuously, and the production folds music, storytelling and visual art into a single performance. This is the latest chapter in Byrne's long association with the concert film, after Spike Lee's American Utopia in 2020 and Jonathan Demme's Stop Making Sense in 1984, still regarded as one of the finest examples of the form. The defining feature of the new project is that it was shot on 70mm film. Byrne said that when Corbet proposed the format he did not understand what difference it would make, until he saw a few frames and realized it captures the widescreen scope of the show. Corbet said he was grateful to be trusted with Byrne's hometown performance, and called the band's work a celebration of community and of Baltimore, one of America's most underappreciated historic cities. Neither a release date nor a distributor has been announced.
