In this tribute, Brian Tallerico remembers Sam Neill, who has died at 78, as an actor who brought genuine humanity to every role, whether hero or villain. After beginning in New Zealand cinema, Neill gained international recognition through Sleeping Dogs, My Brilliant Career, Dead Calm, The Piano, and Jurassic Park, while building a remarkable body of work in horror. Tallerico writes that Neill was more than a movie star: a farmer, an activist, and a warm, unpretentious presence. There may be bad Sam Neill movies, he notes, but there are no bad Sam Neill performances.
