KVIFF 2026: Lover, Not a Fighter, If Pigeons Turned to Gold, Only Beautiful Things to Look At

🎬 RogerEbert.com · July 19, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #12

In this dispatch from the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Robert Daniels considers three films from Central and Eastern Europe. Martina Buchelova's Proxima Competition winner Lover, Not a Fighter is a modern Slovak romantic comedy about young people navigating gender stereotypes, isolation, and loss. Pepa Lubojacki's experimental documentary If Pigeons Turned to Gold offers an intensely personal examination of addiction, homelessness, and intergenerational trauma within her family. Ivan Ostrochovsky's Only Beautiful Things to Look At, a FIPRESCI Award winner, confronts the forced sterilization of Romani women in 1980s Czechoslovakia; Daniels praises its performances but criticizes the film for centering the oppressor's moral awakening while leaving its Romani character at the margins.
