Ten Works of Science Fiction and Fantasy That Still Offer Hope for the Future

📚 LitHub · September 8, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #19

Chloe Benjamin, author of The Immortalists, reflects in Literary Hub on the books and stories that shaped her approach to speculative fiction on the publication of her new novel, Under Story. Benjamin writes that she once regarded realist literary fiction as more serious than fantasy or science fiction, but gradually came to see invented worlds not as an escape from reality, but as another way of understanding it. At a moment when politics can seem absurd or frightening and developments in artificial intelligence increasingly resemble science fiction, she argues that speculative literature can serve both as a mirror of the present and as a source of hope. Her recommendations range from Jorge Luis Borges's Ficciones and Ursula K. Le Guin's "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" to works by Ted Chiang, Susanna Clarke, Jeff VanderMeer, Mohsin Hamid, Marina and Sergey Dyachenko, Kazuo Ishiguro, and Vandana Singh. What connects them, for Benjamin, is not simply their use of fantasy or speculative ideas, but their ability to imagine alternatives: different social arrangements, different relationships with nature and technology, and futures that do not have to follow the trajectory we currently fear.
