“American Doctor”: When the Camera Bears Witness to Doctors in Gaza

Malaysian American filmmaker Poh Si Teng discusses her feature directorial debut, American Doctor, with RogerEbert.com, explaining why she chose to document the experiences of physicians volunteering in Gaza. Filmed over the course of a year, the documentary follows three American doctors: Mark Perlmutter, a Jewish American orthopedic surgeon from North Carolina; Thaer Ahmad, a Palestinian American emergency physician from Chicago; and Feroze Sidhwa, a California trauma surgeon of Pakistani Parsi heritage. The film accompanies them at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis and later back in the United States, where they speak publicly about what they witnessed and advocate for an end to the violence. Teng, whose background spans journalism and documentary production, says she reached a point when conventional reporting no longer felt sufficient to respond to what she was seeing in Gaza. She left her job and invested a substantial amount of her own money to begin making the film. One of her central challenges was deciding how to show graphic evidence of civilian suffering without turning that suffering into spectacle. American Doctor is therefore not only a documentary about physicians working under wartime conditions, but also an inquiry into the responsibilities of witnesses, journalists, and filmmakers when repeated images of devastation risk becoming normalized for audiences.
