Hamed Sadeghi, the Iranian-born tar player and composer based in Sydney, has released a new album, "Comfortable", which Bandcamp Daily included in its column on the best jazz of September 2026. The column's writer, Dave Sumner, describes the record as a blend of modern jazz and Persian classical traditions, in which modal systems from Persian music are structured to leave room for improvisation. Sadeghi plays the tar, the long-necked Persian lute, at the centre of an octet. With him are the saxophonists Sandy Evans and Michael Avgenicos, the bass clarinettist Paul Cutlan, the double bassist Lloyd Swanton of The Necks, the trumpeter Thomas Avgenicos and the percussionists Adem Yilmaz and Sohrab Kolahdooz. The album has seven pieces and came out on September 5. It opens with "Inheritance", Sadeghi's reworking of a reng in the Homayoun mode, and its cover shows a fishing boat on the Caspian Sea. The same group of players worked with him on "Empty Voices" in 2024. Sadeghi, who founded the Eishan Ensemble, says he wanted music that feels "rooted and open at once".
