The Lab, an experimental art space in San Francisco, has relaunched its Living Wage Residency, KQED reported on Oct. 14. Composer Amma Ateria, filmmaker Zachary Epcar and visual artist Alexa Burrell will each receive $17,530, a sum based on MIT's living wage calculator for San Francisco, plus a flexible $5,000 for materials or collaborators, curatorial and technical support, three months of regular access to The Lab and two weeks of exclusive use of the space for final presentations. The program first ran in 2014 under former director Dena Beard. For the relaunch The Lab held its first open call and received more than 400 applications; funding comes from the San Francisco Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. Executive director Andrew Smith said the residency is a response to the Bay Area's affordability crisis. Ateria will premiere an expanded 'Entropic Arias' on a newly installed Meyer Sound spatial audio system in January 2027, Epcar will present an expanded cinema project about the 'Havana Syndrome' in June 2027, and Burrell will create an installation in October 2027 that uses sheets of falling water as screens for video.
