American Theatre reports the launch of the inaugural Berkshires NEW Theater Festival, a new event presented by Salt Tree Art on July 4 in the Berkshires, Massachusetts. Led by artistic director Chris Browne Valenzuela, the festival brings together artists from five continents working across theatre, movement, dance, puppetry, and music to explore the relationships among people, place, culture, and the natural world. The festival’s first program focuses on stories of land, migration, memory, identity, and belonging. Participating artists will present new interdisciplinary works shaped by diverse cultural perspectives and experimental forms. Taking place on the 250th anniversary of American independence, the festival creates a symbolic space for ideas, stories, and artistic practices from around the world to meet in the mountains of the Berkshires. This year’s artists include Anissa Naji, Sancho Alcina, Sasha Novich, Yun Gao, Cherie Chalouhi, Chris Browne Valenzuela, Eliot Madrid, Brian Soliwoda, and Jen Jurek.
