In an American Theatre essay, actor, musician, and original Once cast member Lucas Papaelias writes about the making of let’s make a whole album, a new live concert documentary. The project began as a benefit performance at White Pond Community Arts in New York, where members of the original Once ensemble from the 2011 Off Broadway production and the Tony winning Broadway run reunited after years apart. The event was created to raise funds for improvements to the local arts space and to support scholarships and youth programs. The March 16 reunion centered largely on songs from the Once pre show repertoire and traditional Irish folk music, fitting the pre Saint Patrick’s Day atmosphere. Papaelias first planned to make only a short highlight reel for White Pond’s future fundraising and grant efforts, but the warmth of the live performance and the quality of the recorded footage led him to create a one hour documentary. The film captures vocals and acoustic instruments almost entirely live and unplugged inside the intimate theatre. Papaelias frames the project as both a tribute to the enduring connection among the Once actor musicians and a call for greater support for youth theatre, arts education, and local community performance spaces.
