Sacramento City Unified keeps $1.8 million in arts funding after error

Abridged by PBS KVIE education reporter Savannah Kuchar reports that Sacramento City Unified School District will not have to return $1.8 million in arts money to the state after all. The district received about $6.3 million from Proposition 28, the 2022 ballot measure that funds music, theater, drama and fine arts in schools. Districts began receiving the money in the 2023-24 school year and had three years to spend it, with unused funds going back to the state. Before the correction, Sacramento City Unified was set to return the largest unspent amount of any district in California, as The Sacramento Bee first reported. Chief business officer Gerardo Castillo, who joined over the summer, grew suspicious when he heard that nearly $2 million was untouched. A review of past spending found a clerical error, and the district had in fact spent its full allocation. According to a district news release, the money expanded visual and performing arts programs, including 32 new full-time arts positions. The district says it is working to prevent a repeat as it tries to close a $150 million deficit and avoid state intervention. Photo by Ronbo76, CC BY 2.5, via Wikimedia Commons.

عکس از Ronbo76، CC BY 2.5، Wikimedia Commons
