Paul Huang shines in San Francisco Symphony concert led by Chloe Van Soeterstede

🎼 SF Classical Voice · July 11, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #11

Reviewing the San Francisco Symphony's July 1 concert for San Francisco Classical Voice, Steven Winn praises violinist Paul Huang's performance of Max Bruch's First Violin Concerto as the highlight of the evening. Rather than emphasizing technical display, Huang focused on lyrical phrasing, warmth, and musical continuity, delivering a thoughtful and deeply expressive interpretation. The orchestra responded with sensitive support, particularly in the concerto's final movement. French conductor Chloe Van Soeterstede made her San Francisco Symphony debut. While Winn commends her musical sensitivity and clarity in several passages, he notes recurring problems with balance, communication, and uncertain ensemble entrances, suggesting that additional rehearsal and performances would likely have strengthened the result. The second half featured Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 5, Reformation, which began unevenly but gained momentum in its later movements. The concert opened with Elfrida Andree's Concert Overture. Although Winn finds the work somewhat unfocused, he argues that its inclusion was valuable for introducing audiences to a pioneering Swedish composer who successfully lobbied parliament for women's right to serve as church organists and became the first woman to conduct a Swedish orchestra.
