ODC’s “State of Play” Festival Embraces Risk and Experimentation

🎼 SF Classical Voice · September 8, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #19

The fifth annual State of Play contemporary dance festival at San Francisco's ODC, held August 27–30, presented new and developing works centered on experimentation, risk, and the idea of "play." Opening night featured three pieces that differed sharply in tone and level of development. The standout was Laila J. Franklin's BABYBABYBABY, an exuberant ensemble work that explored love through humor, intimacy, loneliness, and the everyday tensions of relationships. Synchronized movement, a cappella singing, and an understated portrayal of LGBTQ partnerships gave the work both energy and emotional depth. Erin Yen's Nervous used rapid gestures, ensemble discord, and pounding music to evoke the activated human nervous system, although the review found the volume unnecessarily overwhelming. Johnny Huy Nguyen's Burn approached fire through several historical and personal contexts, from Indigenous controlled burns and the Vietnam War to protest self-immolation and the artist's own experiences. Nguyen's physical performance was impressive, but the work as a whole was judged less cohesive. Now in its fifth year, State of Play continues ODC's commitment to giving artists space to experiment, take risks, and present work before it reaches a finished form.
