Godfrey Cheshire writes on RogerEbert.com that the 64th New York Film Festival, running September 25 to October 12, strikes him as its strongest in ages. After three days of press screenings he names several standouts. "Fjord", by Cristian Mungiu, won this year's Palme d'Or and follows conservative Christian immigrants from Romania whose five children are taken by the state in Norway, with Renate Reinsve and Sebastian Stan as the parents. The others are Ryusuke Hamaguchi's "All of a Sudden", Jordan Firstman's "Club Kid" and Andrey Zvyagintsev's "Minotaur". Opening Night is James Gray's "Paper Tiger", the Centerpiece is Tony Gilroy's "Behemoth!" and Closing Night is Ava DuVernay's documentary "14th". Among the other world premieres he lists Luca Guadagnino's "Artificial", with Andrew Garfield as Sam Altman, Takashi Yamazaki's "Godzilla Minus Zero", Tom McCarthy's "A Statement" and a documentary by Iranian director Mani Haghighi about two archivists in Tabriz.
