Novid Parsi on ‘The Life You Gave Me’: If Only

American Theatre's Fall 2026 print edition publishes in full "The Life You Gave Me" by the Iranian American playwright Novid Parsi. The play had its world premiere in 2025 at Boise Contemporary Theater in Idaho, directed by Hamid Dehghani. In it, a gay Iranian American man tries for years to get his immigrant mother to leave her abusive husband, his father. Two outside voices keep interrupting to question the son's right to tell his mother's story. In a conversation with director Kimberly Senior, Parsi says he began the play in 2021, about a year after his mother died. He kept hearing critics ask why he would write an abusive Iranian man when Americans already see Iranians as inherently violent. He was able to write only once he invited those voices into the play. Parsi says stories of domestic violence usually end in resolution, redemption or revenge, and he wanted a fourth ending, resilience. The mother endures because of her strength of character, not weakness. He notes that no one explains the violence in plays by Tennessee Williams or Sam Shepard by the whiteness of their characters. He calls it a play about grief and its "if only". Audience members have come to him in tears, saying, "This is my mother."

نوید پارسی از نمایشنامهٔ «The Life You Gave Me» می‌گوید

American Theatre در شمارهٔ چاپی پاییز ۲۰۲۶ متن کامل «The Life You Gave Me» نوشتهٔ نوید پارسی، نمایشنامه‌نویس ایرانی‌آمریکایی، را منتشر کرده است.
