La MaMa, in association with Spiderwoman Theater and in collaboration with Loose Change Productions, has announced the Global Indigenous Theatre Festival, running from October 30 to November 7 at La MaMa's Ellen Stewart Theatre and Downstairs Theatre in New York. American Theatre reports that the nine-day festival marks Spiderwoman Theater's 50th anniversary and brings Indigenous artists from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Minneapolis. Artistic director Muriel Miguel says the idea took shape on a 2024 trip to Australia, after a performance by a First Nations dance company. The festival opens with "Kōpū" by Te Pou Theatre of Aotearoa New Zealand, in which young Māori women weave together live music, poetry and poi. On the same weekend the Ikidowin Theater Ensemble of Minneapolis performs "Invisible Shadows", about urban Indigenous youth in the midst of an opioid epidemic. From Australia, Moogahlin Performing Arts presents "Maayuma li Mubirr (Healing Scars)" by composer and performer Warren Mason, and Aanmitaagzi of Nipissing First Nation in Ontario brings the dance theatre project "All My R(el)ations". The festival closes on November 7 with a 50th anniversary gala curated by Murielle Borst-Tarrant. General admission is $30, and a full festival pass costs $100.
