Nadia Hopkins’s ‘Humane Traps’ Takes 2026 Relentless Award

American Theatre editor Rob Weinert-Kendt interviews Nadia Hopkins, 24, whose play Humane Traps has won the 2026 Relentless Award, the $50,000 prize for unproduced work set up by the American Playwriting Foundation in memory of Philip Seymour Hoffman. Now in its tenth edition, the award first went in 2015 to Clare Barron's Dance Nation and Sarah DeLappe's The Wolves, a play that inspired Hopkins in high school. Hopkins, who grew up in Boston and lives in Ridgewood, Brooklyn, wrote the five-character play as her honors thesis at Connecticut College and directed a full staging there. In it a young woman, Charlie, is sent to stay with her aunt and her uncle Rick, who face a mouse infestation and Rick's approaching death. Hopkins says the idea grew from the mice at a Quaker camp where she worked and from a humane trap she saw in a hardware store, and that the couple's handling of the mice mirrors how they deal with Rick's dying. Judges included Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and Thomas Bradshaw. Finalists Regan Moro, william o'neal ii and Matt Thekkethala each receive $2,000, and Morgan Green directs a reading at the November 16 ceremony at Theatre Row in New York.

Wikimedia Commons.
