Mike Flanagan's eight-part adaptation of Stephen King's 1974 novel "Carrie" is on Prime Video. Richard Roeper writes on RogerEbert.com that the story is so familiar after Brian De Palma's 1976 film and the later versions that the series will not shock anyone out of their seat, and that Flanagan wisely leans into this. He mirrors the structure of the novel by opening with 911 calls on prom night and then a documentary in which survivors piece the events together. Roeper finds the series most impressive as a study of religious fanaticism, pack mentality, repression, isolation and the way social media has made high school cruelty worse. An anonymous Instagram account sets off the chaos at school. He calls it not the scariest "Carrie" but the most layered, and says eight episodes allow deeper backstories for the supporting characters. Summer H. Howell plays Carrie and Samantha Sloyan her mother Margaret, who here becomes something of an influencer. Roeper also praises Amber Midthunder as the gym teacher, Alison Thornton as the lead bully, Matthew Lillard and Tim Bagley.
