Female Filmmakers in Focus: Paloma Schneideman on “Big Girls Don’t Cry”

"Big Girls Don't Cry" is the first feature by the New Zealand writer-director Paloma Schneideman. Set in the summer of 2006, it follows Sid, played by newcomer Ani Palmer, a teenager in a rural community who moves from one group of friends to another and faces her new desires without a roadmap. The film had its world premiere in the World Dramatic Competition at this year's Sundance Film Festival. It went on to South by Southwest, BFI Flare, TIFF Next Wave and Melbourne, and it opened the 2026 New Zealand International Film Festival. Marya E. Gates interviews Schneideman for the Female Filmmakers in Focus column on RogerEbert.com. Schneideman, who comes from Auckland and has also worked as a musician, drew on her own rural upbringing and queer coming of age. She developed the film in part during A Wave in the Ocean, a year-long intensive run by Jane Campion and producer Philippa Campbell, where she was one of ten participants in the first cohort. She was meant to make a short film there, but Campion read her script and told her to make the feature instead. Schneideman says the film would not have had as much depth without that year.
