Kent Nagano’s Berkeley Symphony Homecoming Has Taken Longer Than Odysseus’s to Ithaca

🎼 SF Classical Voice · August 31, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #18

Kent Nagano, Berkeley Symphony's former music director, returns to the orchestra after a 17-year absence to open its 2026–2027 season. Nagano led the orchestra for 31 years, from 1978 to 2009, and now holds the title of music director laureate; he conducts on October 18 at the Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts. His program sets a new work by the Argentine composer Alex Nante, built on a Bach chorale, alongside Mendelssohn: an overture, the Piano Concerto No. 1 with Mari Kodama as soloist, and the Symphony No. 5, "Reformation." Nagano, 74, was born in Berkeley and after leaving the orchestra spent decades leading orchestras and opera houses in Lyon, Berlin, Manchester, Hamburg, Los Angeles and Montreal. Asked about the homecoming he set the personal side aside and spoke instead about Berkeley itself, about a university and a community that he says keep the spirit of the Age of Reason alive, and about audiences whose knowledge, experience and curiosity create the conditions for the social dialogue that creativity needs. Berkeley Symphony has had no permanent music director since last year, following Joana Carneiro and Joseph Young. The orchestra has 48 professional musicians, joined by around a dozen volunteer players from the local community, a combination the organization considers what makes it distinctive. Last year, after speaking candidly with its audience about its financial difficulties, it raised more than 1.5 million dollars and sold out all eight of its concerts. As is the orchestra's long tradition, more than half the works in the new season are by living composers.

Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts
