Julianna Barwick and Mary Lattimore are releasing their second collaborative project of 2026, the score for Threshold, a documentary about the American cross-country skier and four-time Olympic medalist Jessie Diggins, directed by the brothers Lars and Torsten Brinkema. Alongside her years at the top of the sport, the film covers a period in which Diggins was living with an illness and sought treatment for it. The sixteen-track album was recorded in the Highland Park and Echo Park neighborhoods of Los Angeles and comes out on November 20 on Florid Recordings and Blue Pool Recordings. Three tracks, Cold Open, Sick and Tired and Gallivare 10km, were released alongside the announcement, and the film itself arrived on streaming on August 28. The pair released their first album together, Tragic Magic, in January of this year. Lattimore describes the two projects as opposites. On Tragic Magic the range of instruments was limited, among them historic, delicate and mysterious ones, but within those limits they had complete sonic freedom. On Threshold there was no limit at all on instrumentation, but the music had to sit inside the framework of Diggins's life and the directors' vision. Making both in a single year, she says, was two sides of one coin, and an experience that was demanding, mind-expanding and satisfying.
