Conductor Karina Canellakis, music director of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, gave her best performance yet with the San Francisco Symphony on October 9 at Davies Symphony Hall, writes Lisa Hirsch in SF Classical Voice. Her earlier visits had left an impression of brusque readings and unblended volume, but this time she showed a fine ear for color and balance in a program of Russian music. Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances, his last work, filled the second half. The critic praises the wind solos of the first dance, including Ricardo Martinez on alto saxophone, the rich string sound of the Andante, and the finale, where the Dies irae chant that runs through the piece finally breaks out in full. The concert opened with The Kingdom of Silence, a 14-minute work of 2003 by the Russian-Swedish composer Victoria Borisova-Ollas, whose title comes from Psalm 94 and refers to the world after death. Scottish violinist Nicola Benedetti played Prokofiev's Second Violin Concerto with a big, healthy sound, clean and careful though never quite inspired, and gave Jay Ungar's Ashokan Farewell as an encore.
عکس از Andreas Praefcke، CC BY 3.0، Wikimedia Commons.
