From Anna Boghiguian to Iris van Herpen

🎨 Hyperallergic · August 9, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #15

Hyperallergic's weekly newsletter gathers the week's art-world news, interviews and features. The lead piece is an essay by Ed Simon, "AI Companies Are Pulping Our Humanity," on companies, Anthropic among them, that buy out-of-print books in bulk, digitize them and then pulp them to train their large language models. In the news section, more than 400 members of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago community are calling for the reinstatement of Savneet Talwar, the professor placed on leave after she asked students to imagine treatment for a pro-Palestinian protester. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, meanwhile, has released scans of nine pages of drawings by children detained in Texas to the podcast host Allison Gill, following a lawsuit she filed in March. And after twenty years of delays, the Guggenheim Foundation has set December 11 as the opening date for its Frank Gehry-designed Abu Dhabi museum. Among the interviews, the Armenian-Egyptian artist Anna Boghiguian speaks about weaving Armenia and about the gift of being alive, which she describes as cultivating a garden within oneself. A never-before-published conversation with the late performance artist Simone Forti also appears, in which she discusses Yoko Ono, dance and aging, and recalls sitting restfully beside Ono on a ledge of the PS1 roof. Elsewhere in the issue: a report from Iris van Herpen's Brooklyn Museum show, which invites visitors to work in a recreated version of the Dutch designer's atelier; Kimsooja's first Toronto exhibition in thirty years; and a guide to ten Los Angeles shows to see in August.
