In its second season, Apple TV's Dark Matter turns what Kaiya Shunyata found an exhausting, reality-hopping first season into a grounded examination of humanity and belonging. The series is based on Blake Crouch's novel, and Crouch now serves as showrunner and principal writer. The story picks up seven months after the first season ended, with Jason Dessen, played by Joel Edgerton, his wife Daniela, played by Jennifer Connelly, and their son Charlie living quietly in another version of Chicago. The calm breaks when yet another Jason enters the house and tries to seduce Daniela. This time she shoots him, a police officer finds the body, and the family is on the run again. The key change is that the Box and the mechanics of travel between dimensions are no longer the center of the story. The question now is what the Box has done to everyone else. Daniela, Ryan, played by Jimmi Simpson, and Amanda, played by Alice Braga, are given far more room, all three trying to make sense of lives they cannot return to. With Jason moved off center, Blair Caplan and Leighton Vance get some of the show's best material, and the series takes on the shape of an espionage thriller with car chases and tense searches through files. Shunyata singles out two episodes, each built around a character the audience barely knows, as among the year's best. Season two began August 28 with weekly episodes.
