While the Academy Awards still have no competitive Oscar for film choreography, television recognizes dance with two Emmys: Outstanding Choreography for Scripted Programming and Outstanding Choreography for Variety or Reality Programming. This year's nominees, as Dance Magazine reported, revealed the remarkable range of choreography on television, spanning Bridgerton, Wednesday, and Palm Royale as well as Tate McRae's MTV Video Music Awards performance, the Oscars, RuPaul's Drag Race, and Bad Bunny's Super Bowl halftime show. At the Creative Arts Emmys in Los Angeles on September 5 and 6, Brooke Lipton won Outstanding Choreography for Scripted Programming for Palm Royale. In the variety and reality category, Charm La'Donna and Karina Ortiz won for The Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show Starring Bad Bunny, a program that took seven Emmys in all and featured Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin among its guests. This year's awards underline how choreography now extends far beyond traditional dance programming, functioning as an essential storytelling language across scripted television, awards shows, music performances, and some of the world's largest live broadcasts.
