This article reexamines the contribution of Argentine novelist and screenwriter Beatriz Guido through three films: The House of the Angel, The Fall, and The Hand in the Trap. Directed by her husband, Leopoldo Torre Nilsson, between 1957 and 1961, all three were based on Guido’s fiction and starred Elsa Daniel in their central roles. The films follow young women trapped inside dark Gothic homes shaped by family secrets, religious pressure, and patriarchal control. The article argues that Guido’s visual imagination and narrative world were crucial to Torre Nilsson’s emerging cinematic style and international success, even though her own contribution has often been overshadowed by his reputation. It also considers Guido’s complicated position within Argentine culture. She belonged to privileged intellectual circles while writing critically about the same social world from within. The recent revival of interest in her work offers a chance to recognize an author whose voice and imagery remain deeply embedded in some of Argentina’s most important films.
