California State Railroad Museum lights its lobby with 204 historic lanterns

The California State Railroad Museum in Old Sacramento has completed the Lantern Project, one phase of a multi-year renovation of its lobby, the museum and its foundation announced on Oct. 13. The new open-storage display presents 204 historic lanterns from a collection of more than 500, each fitted with a custom 3D-printed flame that lights up with LED effects, made by museum staff with the firm Bekonix. Railroad workers relied on lanterns to communicate, inspect equipment and work after dark. The display includes ornate presentation lanterns given to conductors for service milestones or retirement, sometimes bearing names on their globes, inspectors' lanterns with reflective surfaces, and colored signal lanterns, and it shows how designs changed with new fuels and advances in glassmaking. The museum at 111 I Street, which welcomes close to 300,000 visitors in a typical year, is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. When the whole lobby project is done, the space will be redesigned and reinterpreted.

Wikimedia Commons
