In the latest edition of Short Films in Focus for RogerEbert.com, Collin Souter reviews Jack Dunphy's documentary short Bob's Funeral. Beginning with the funeral of the filmmaker's grandfather, the film gradually becomes a personal investigation into three generations of one family, exploring fatherhood, grief, and inherited trauma. By carrying his camera through uncomfortable family conversations, Dunphy reveals the contrast between the legacy of his grandfather Bob and that of his father Mark. Souter praises the film's honesty and emotional openness, noting how it combines documentary footage with simple cut-out animation to balance humor and painful reflection. He concludes that Bob's Funeral is ultimately about how people are remembered and how those memories shape the way their lives are celebrated after death. The full film is freely available on YouTube.
