Arthur Jafa’s Largest-Ever Survey Heads to the New Museum

The New Museum in New York will mount the largest survey to date of the filmmaker and multimedia artist Arthur Jafa, opening September 24 and running through early January 2027. Titled I Am Tony after the pioneering jazz drummer Tony Williams, the exhibition fills two floors of the museum's newly expanded building with works from nearly four decades of Jafa's career exploring what he calls "Black being." It brings together his best-known pieces, including Love Is the Message, The Message Is Death, a searing 2016 video montage of Black visual culture set to Kanye West's "Ultralight Beam," and The White Album, his 2018 meditation on whiteness that won the Golden Lion at the 2019 Venice Biennale, alongside the premiere of new work. Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, Jafa studied architecture before turning to cinematography, and his films and installations are now held by major museums around the world. The show's nod to Tony Williams underscores the deep dialogue between Jafa's pulsing imagery and Black music.

Love Is the Message, The Message Is Death، مونتاژ ویدیویی پرشور سال ۲۰۱۶ از فرهنگ بصری سیاه‌پوستان که روی قطعه‌ی «Ultralight Beam» کانیه وست سوار شده، و فیلم The White Album، تأمل سال ۲۰۱۸ او درباره‌ی «سفیدی» که جایزه‌ی شیر طلایی دوسالانه‌ی ونیز ۲۰۱۹ را برد، در کنار رونمایی از آثار تازه.
