Anne Carson Wins the Nobel Prize in Literature

The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2026 goes to Anne Carson, the Canadian poet, essayist, classicist and translator. The Swedish Academy announced the award on October 8, praising her "bold and inventive oeuvre" that has created new forms for contemporary literature in playful dialogue with the classical tradition. The Paris Review marked the news by recalling its 2004 Art of Poetry interview with Carson, made when she was teaching classics at the University of Michigan and was still reluctant to call herself a poet. In that conversation she said she writes to find out what she thinks about something, and that she prefers old and battered surfaces, because ancient Greek texts reach us in wreckage, copied, buried, pieced together and put back in museums, and every layer adds more life. The Review gave Carson its Hadada award for lifetime achievement in 2025. Over the years it has published six of her poems, a work of narrative art, a short story and a radio play. To celebrate the prize, it has opened all of her work in its archive to readers this week. Photo: Jay Dixit, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons.

Wikimedia Commons.
