A Requiem for Terezín: Berkeley Community Chorus Premieres a New Holocaust Memorial Work

🎼 SF Classical Voice · June 12, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #7

The Berkeley Community Chorus & Orchestra, a 60-year-old volunteer ensemble of some 240 unauditioned singers whose concerts have always been free and open to all, is premiering a newly commissioned work that honors the victims of the Holocaust. Written by composer Michael Schachter, the Terezín Requiem grows out of an extraordinary chapter of history: inside the Terezín concentration camp, prisoners facing starvation, disease, and deportation to Auschwitz still built a flourishing cultural life, staging operas, forming choirs, and performing masterpieces such as Verdi's Requiem. Schachter, whose wife's great-grandfather was held at Terezín before being murdered at Auschwitz, has thought about the camp for fifteen years. His score blends the choral-orchestral traditions of Fauré and Brahms with Hebrew liturgical chant, drawing its opening and closing movements from Psalm 144 and the El Malei Rachamim prayer, and aims to speak both to Holocaust remembrance and to the power of art to preserve human dignity under oppression. The chorus performs the work over three free concerts in Berkeley on June 12, 13, and 14, with soprano Ronit Widmann-Levy and baritone Simon Barrad, and plans to carry it to the Netherlands, Prague, and Terezín itself in 2027.
