This review covers two performances at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara. The first, titled In Her Words, was curated by Missy Mazzoli and explored mentorship through her own compositions and works by other women composers. The reviewer found Mazzoli’s vocal pieces the most emotionally affecting. Dark with Excessive Bright received a lyrical and passionate performance from double bassist Scott Pingel and the Maple Quartet. The world premiere of A Cathedral of Rust and Birds by 15-year-old composer Mia Turakhia brought youthful vitality to the program. The following evening, Xian Zhang conducted the Academy Festival Orchestra in works by Nokuthula Ngwenyama, Anton Webern, and Gustav Holst. The Planets was accompanied by spectacular NASA footage, although the projection screen partially muffled the brass and woodwinds. Despite the acoustic limitation, Zhang conveyed the majesty and power of Holst’s score, with Jupiter and Mars making the strongest impression.
A Cathedral of Rust and Birds
