About this work

Lyon, 1943: Lieutenant Fontaine of the French Resistance, held in the German-run Montluc prison, patiently prepares his escape with a sharpened spoon, blankets and bed wire. Bresson based the film on André Devigny's account, cast non-professionals, and won the directing prize at Cannes in 1957.

¶ Written for Bresson's 125th birthday, the essay sees the film as a drama of hands and hearing, with prison sounds standing in for what is not shown, and turning on whether Fontaine will trust the teenage boy placed in his cell. The question, it argues, is not whether he escapes but what a person becomes while working toward the door. ▶ Listen at the source ↗

¶ Ebert treats Bresson's unadorned style, free of stars and effects, as a lesson in cinema, and observes that Fontaine's close scrutiny of every detail of his cell mirrors Bresson's own method and holds the viewer spellbound. ▶ Listen at the source ↗

¶ Pipolo ranks it among the greatest prison-break films and examines how Bresson's version departs from Devigny's account, arguing that Bresson cared as much about the story's spiritual meaning as about its factual detail. ▶ Listen at the source ↗

¶ Eggert starts from the opening shot of hands and shows how Bresson builds suspense from close views of hands and objects, from work and concentration rather than outward excitement. ▶ Listen at the source ↗
