About this work

On the eve of the Second World War, Renoir films a house party at a French country estate where love, betrayal, jealousy and class relations hide behind civilised manners. Jeered at its premiere and then banned, it was reconstructed in the 1950s and has placed in the top ten of every Sight and Sound poll since 1952.
