This is a lyric prose poem or poetic essay about the annual renewal that Nowruz brings to the speaker. Each spring, the narrator becomes a child again, four or five years old, with a child's senses and wonder. Kites of many colors fly and dance before their eyes; their ears fill with the sounds of crickets and sparrows; they carry poems and seeds in small fists for chicks. Nowruz carries the scent of narcissus and flax, the color of saffron and fire. The speaker becomes a four-winged paper butterfly, trembling and turning in a kindergarten garden.
