The Empty Ewer

The Empty Ewer

By

Years caught fire
and I, a weary traveler on the road
as if a century
from one world to another
a newborn on the way to school
A burning ache melts me
The fire of this weary heart
flares so high
    as if in hell
out of the minds of children deformed
I am that ewer
empty of wine
noon into night
and night into dawn
waiting for a sun from the east of the cup
O school! My school!
Which unspoken word
is your lamp?
The raised banner of a rider
from an unknown indigo of unseen mists
Years caught fire
yes
like a single breath between two draughts
that casts a bridge from youth to sorrow
and carries drunkenness into legend
a legend whose believing
empties legend of legend
