In This Black Night

By

At the crossing of this marketplace
he sits, his eyes cunning,
    the night watchman,
waiting for some passerby to come
who does not know the password of the night,
so he may bind his hands
and drag him off to prison.

*
Farther on,
in the deep shadows beneath the underpass,
young men, newly come of age,
in the guise of ancient legends,
    blades strapped at their sides,
drunk on the wine of imagining,
    lie in wait,
so that if a night watchman,
or some stranger not of their kind,
        should make his way
toward them,
they may cut off his path,
tear away his clothes
and drag his body through the mud.

*
In this black night
the night watchmen
    with a bellow
carve their own part into stone:
"So the people may sleep in peace,
    our work must carry on.
The ancient order
    must endure.
Unafraid of the foreign foe,
    we stand ready for battle.
Until we raise this order to its height,
    we shall know no rest."

*
In this black night
the blade-bearers of midnight
fashion
    their own image
    in song:
"Again the moon and this dark night,
the skirt of moonlight, the field of spite.
Every cry beneath the dome of night
is a flash of lightning in a garden of mirrors.
We are the guardians of a weary people;
in this passage
our chests are their shield."

*
In this black night,
behind every closed
and half-open door,
others remain awake,
wondering how thought
might be carried to its destination,
sitting there, troubled,
studying
the hidden faces of the two camps,
and under their breath they murmur:
"We are not of the night watchmen's ranks,
        nor are we blade-bearers.
We make no grand claims,
yet neither are we without a claim.
We are neither dreamers
    nor nightmares,
neither wholly awake
nor asleep.
We are neither in the depth of a well
    nor in the sky.
We have not strayed from the road,
yet neither are we on it now.
Between fear and hope,
we are on the road to dawn.
Neither the night watchman accepts us
    nor the blade-bearer.
We are neither this nor that.
And on this journey
    how can we
be our own guides
when we do not know our way?
If we are powerless,
    still,
we are filled throughout
with hope and strength."

*
In this black night
the sky is overcast.
What can a lover do
who has promised the beloved
    a meeting?
What can the working man do
if he has come wounded from the struggle?
In this black night,
    who sleeps?
    who is awake?
