SF Symphony Season Opener Had Plenty of Thrills, but Too Little Depth

🎼 SF Classical Voice · September 21, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #21

The San Francisco Symphony opened its 2026-27 subscription season on September 18 at Davies Symphony Hall under guest conductor David Afkham, with Unsuk Chin's six-minute subito con forza, Schumann's Symphony No. 4 and Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 1 with Garrick Ohlsson. Critic Steven Winn found the evening fast and exciting, with Chin's piece and the Schumann finale as high points, and wished for more warmth and reflection in the Brahms. Ohlsson, 78 and in full command of the keyboard, won a standing ovation and answered with Chopin's Grande valse brillante, which Winn found the most enchanting playing of the night.
