American Theatre reports on the first edition of The Festival, a three-day outdoor event running August 14 to 16 in Kingston, New York, about two hours north of Manhattan. The site is Hutton Brickyards, a nineteenth-century brickworks turned hundred-acre riverfront venue on the Hudson. The idea is to take Broadway out of the theatre district and stage it under the open sky the way a music festival is staged. No musical will be performed in full; the programs are solo sets, themed shows and tributes to composers, spread across three stages by day and a fourth in the evenings. The "Previews of New Musicals" program runs at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 15 on the main stage, introducing seven new works: "Autopilot," inspired by the life of 1950s TWA flight attendant Betty Milstead; "BLUDLINE: A Hip-Hop Odyssey," which remakes Homer's Odyssey through hip-hop and R&B; "Huzzah!," about two sisters trying to save the family business at a Renaissance Faire; "Love Somebody," with music and lyrics by Betty Who; "Regency Girls," about an unmarried pregnant woman in nineteenth-century England; "Someday Soon," drawn from the real diary of fourteen-year-old Rutka Laskier; and "Star Machine," about two ambitious sisters who land on a television talent show. Elsewhere on the bill: appearances by Audra McDonald, Kelli O'Hara, Renée Elise Goldsberry and Christopher Jackson, and a thirtieth-anniversary "Rent" reunion with nearly the whole original Broadway cast.
