Sacramento arts advocate Dennis Mangers receives Mort Friedman Civic Leadership Award

Dennis Mangers, 85, a longtime advocate for the arts and for LGBTQ communities in the Sacramento region, is the 2026 recipient of the Mort Friedman Civic Leadership Award, Abridged by PBS KVIE reported on Oct. 10. The award, a partnership between Abridged and the Friedman family, honors a regional leader whose public service has had a lasting impact, and it carries $25,000 from a Friedman family fund at the Sacramento Region Community Foundation. Mangers is giving the whole sum to arts groups: $5,000 each to Sacramento Ballet, the Broadway Sacramento Youth Conservatory and the Dennis Mangers Fund for Young Performing Artists, $2,500 to the Sacramento Symphony, and smaller gifts to the Mandarins Drum and Bugle Corps, Crocker Art Museum education programs, CLARA, Capital Stage, B Street Theatre, Sacramento Master Singers and the Sacramento Gay Men's Chorus. A former teacher and state assemblyman, Mangers retired in 2020 as the mayor's strategic adviser for arts, culture and the creative economy. He helped steer Covid relief money to the region's cultural groups, led the drive to renovate the aging Community Center Theater into today's SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center, and helped start the Sacramento Gay Men's Chorus.
