Rushes: From the Venice Lineup to Elon Musk’s Latest Project

🎬 MUBI Notebook · August 3, 2026 · Owrang Weekly #14

In its July 29 edition of Rushes, MUBI's Notebook rounds up the week's news, projects in development, deaths, criticism and events from the film world. The Venice Film Festival has unveiled its 2026 lineup, which includes new work by Lav Diaz, Lee Chang-dong and Werner Herzog. Paramount has agreed to delay its merger with Warner Bros. until next June so that a federal judge can weigh a lawsuit from a coalition of twelve states seeking to block the deal. Paramount has called the delay a significant win, but it has also accepted a heavy cost: beginning in October, it will pay Warner Bros. shareholders 650 million dollars for every quarter the deal is not finalized. Elon Musk has pledged to make his own historically accurate version of The Odyssey with his generative AI tool Grok before the end of the year. He had previously been sharply critical of Christopher Nolan's Odyssey and of the casting of Lupita Nyong'o. Nolan's film has meanwhile taken more than 600 million dollars worldwide. After years of protests and petitions from the Los Angeles film community, the Cinerama Dome and the Arclight Hollywood multiplex are set to be revived. Both closed in 2020 at the onset of the pandemic, and the family of William R. Forman, who owns the properties, is now in talks with Sony and Alamo Drafthouse about reopening them. In development, Richard Linklater will direct a biopic of the baseball player Lou Gehrig starring Glen Powell, produced by Lorne Michaels from a script by Simon Rich. The remembrance section is given to Brenda Fricker, the Irish actress, who has died at 81. She came through a difficult childhood to become a presence on screen and stage in Britain, and won international acclaim as the mother of Christy Brown in Jim Sheridan's My Left Foot (1989), for which she received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, becoming the first Irish actress to win it. She worked with Sheridan again on The Field the following year before taking maternal roles in Hollywood pictures including Home Alone 2, So I Married an Axe Murderer and Angels in the Outfield. Her final lead performance was in Tadhg O'Sullivan's experimental drama The Swallow (2024), as an elderly artist reflecting on her life in a small house on the Irish coast. Among the recommended reading: Christian Lorentzen pans Nolan's Odyssey in The Nation, calling it an epic of simplistic populism in which irony and playfulness have given way to trauma, shame and healing. In the New York Times, Alissa Wilkinson traces the footprint of Ross McElwee's films on reality television, vlogging and non-fiction cinema. For Criterion's Current, Jonathan Lethem praises Harry Dean Stanton's performance in Straight Time (1978) as his greatest. And for Vulture, Sarah Chihaya revisits Beth's death scene in Gillian Armstrong's Little Women (1994). Recommended events include Brassai: Secret Paris at the Heide Museum of Modern Art in Melbourne through November 15, a survey of the Hungarian-born French photographer with an emphasis on his pictures of city nightlife; the 49th Asian American International Film Festival at the Asia Society in New York, July 30 to August 2; Christopher Nolan: Grand Designs at TIFF Cinematheque in Toronto, July 31 to August 20; and Vroom, Screech, a series on the car chase at Chicago's Siskel Film Center, July 31 to August 27, including Gun Crazy (1950) and Traffic (1971). Among the trailers, Warner Bros. has released first images from Dune: Part Three, the third and final entry in Denis Villeneuve's trilogy. Neon presents a trailer for Hope by Na Hong-jin, a science-fiction thriller about a local police chief defending his community from a mysterious creature. A24 has a trailer for Chris Rock's Misty Green, about an award-winning actress, played by Rosalind Eleazar, attempting a comeback while repairing her personal life, which will premiere at Toronto. And there is a trailer for It Ends, Alexander Ullom's directorial debut about a group of friends stranded on a never-ending road after a wrong turn on a late-night drive.
